No, this is not a typo! It’s the official title of the WORK AT HOME MOM
I am busy typing up this article for SmallTalk Magazine, as my (nearly!) three year old is watching a Barney video and enjoying a snack, before we rush out the door in 40 minutes for our Mom & Toddler swim lesson.
I know that this assignment, like all of my work, may need to be completed in dozens of fifteen minute increments, but I’m ok with that! I've put in a full day and it is only 9:30 am. I have walked my eldest daughter to school, delivered a parcel to the post office as they opened, returned a business call, cut up an apple for the (nearly!) three year old, started my nine hundredth load of laundry, answered some e-mails, begun writing some ideas down for an e-program I want to design, taken my (nearly!) three year old to the potty...
Yep, I live in a fragmented world. Multi-tasking has taken on new meaning. AND I WOULD NOT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY!
The combination of mother and business owner isn't for everyone. For me, however, it is a wonderful blend of inspiration, challenge and soul food that I have never found anywhere else….Whether your business from home is presently underway, or even just a notion that’s warming in your soul, I hope you will read on and enjoy my Top Ten Tips for Being a WAHM...
MY TOP TEN REASONS FOR BEING A WAHM!
- Yellow crayons make great highlighters.
- You can amaze your friends and family with the fact that you can type 63 WPM while nursing your baby and taking an order from your newest client. (Okay, maybe THEY won't be impressed, but YOU will be!)
- You'll have the most entrepreneurial kids in the neighbourhood. Forget about lemonade stands - they'll be CEOs of their own jewellery making business - paying other kids commissions on sales and getting write ups in the local papers.
- No matter how indifferent they may seem, your teenagers will LOVE the fact that you are there when they get home.
- Finger painting unleashes your creativity for a new business card, flyer or pamphlet.
- In time you will honestly smile from your heart and not have to bite your tongue when people call you a "lady of leisure." If they only knew.
- Your little ones don't care what you wear to work. (Or even if you've brushed your hair!) In fact, the goofier you look, the better you look in their eyes!
- When your daughter looks at you with her big baby blues and pleads "Mommy, please don't go to work today." You can instantly answer "Okay!" without asking your boss for permission.
- Hugging and kissing at work won't get you in trouble with your husband. (With your kids, of course - Come on now!)
- And the best reason for being a work-at-home mom ... People will ask you "How do you do it all?" And you'll just give them your best Mona Lisa smile and wonder that very same thing to yourself, but know with all your heart and soul that however you manage it all, it's worth it!
Be brave, be inspired, be a WAHM!
